About Rio 2016

Let’s explore the international multi-sport event -Rio 2016. Regulated by the International Olympic Committee this traditional event is runs from August 5th to August 21st and is being hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The games include 28 Olympic sports, 306 sets of medals, 38 different venues, and over 11,000 participating athletes form 206 National Olympic Committees.

Why Rio?

Each city that wishes to host the Olympic games must participate in a bidding process. The process for the 2016 Olympic games was set in motion on May 16, 2007 and required that all applicants submit an  application affirming their desire to to bid to the International Olympic Committee by September 13, 2007.

Next applicants were required to complete an IOC form consisting of 25 questions by January 14, 2008. On June 4, 2008, four cities were chosen. These cities included Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, and Madrid.

The final decision was made on October 2, 2009 in Copenhagen. Tokyo and Chicago were the first to be eliminated from the running, leaving only Rio de Janeiro and Madrid left. After an overwhelming number of votes, Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the host city for the 2016 Olympics games.
